The Sentinelese people are an indigenous and isolated tribe inhabiting North Sentinel Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India. They are one of the few remaining uncontacted peoples in the world, meaning they have had little to no contact with the outside world and have resisted attempts at contact. The Indian government, recognizing the vulnerability of uncontacted tribes to diseases for which they have no immunity, has implemented a policy of non-interference and protection for the Sentinelese people.
The Sentinalese have remained largely isolated from the outside world, and their isolation is enforced by the Indian government to protect both the tribe and outsiders. They are known for their hostility towards outsiders. They have been known to resist any attempts at contact, often responding with aggression. There is limited knowledge of the Sentinelese tribe due to their isolation and the dangers associated with approaching the island, very little is known about the language, culture and customs.
The Indian government has designated North Sentinel Island as a restricted area, and access is prohibited to protect the them. The protection is not only for the tribe but also to prevent the introduction of diseases to which they may have no immunity.
In November 2018, there was an incident where an American missionary illegally attempted to make contact with the Sentinelese and was killed. This tragic event highlighted the dangers of trying to contact isolated tribes and reinforced the need for respecting their isolation.
The tribes isolation is seen as a measure to preserve their unique way of life and to protect them from potential harm. Efforts are made to monitor the island and deter any unauthorized attempts at contact.
